Vote No Virginia… you believe the amendment writes discrimination into the Virginia constitution.

  1. What discrimination. We all have the right to marry any individual of the opposite sex who will have us (with some age and familial limitations). That some cannot do so, or will not do so, is not a violation of anyone’s rights.

  2. Run out of arguments, Jack? Had to pull out the lame one about people marrying opposite sex members. You refuse to see the parallels between civil rights for various minority groups.

Tyranny of the majority. That’s what you want to implement. And it is something our forefathers railed against. It is what it has taken generations to begin to correct when it comes to blacks in this country. Did you know blacks were prohibited from marrying, Jack? And after such marriages were legal, did you know Virginia prohibited interracial marriage until the US Supreme Court forced them to be allowed in 1967?

The exact same arguments are being used today to discriminate against hard-working, productive members of our society. What do you want gays to do, Jack? Leave the state & the country? Shall we be like Oregon – where blacks were not even allowed to live in the state?

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. You and the Bob Marshalls of the world seem to think you are the only ones who should have rights, and that only people like you – people who act like you, people who think like you – are entitled to them.

Grow up, Jack. This ain’t 1950 and you aren’t Ward Cleaver. For someone who claims to have studied so many things (perhaps the reason you use the name Jack is because you are a Jack of all trades, master of none), you seemed to have missed the lessons of tolerance.

  3. Not so. The prohibition on interratial marriages restricted the pool of mates unfairly. Blacks did not have the same candidates for spouse as Whites. That is no longer the case.

I have asked David of Equality Loudoun (http://www.equalityloudoun.org/) why he and Jonathan have not left VA. They gave many reasons, such as job and family, but it all boils down to the fact that, to them, being able to marry is simply not worth moving. (Many interracial couples did think it worth the move.)

The state has long outlawed marriages considered immoral. One such law was the prohibition on interracial marriages. Currently, prohibited marriages include same-sex marriage, marriage between close relatives, and the marriage of those who who are already married. All of the current prohibitions but the last are biblically-based.

FYI, Jack is my real name, but most people think it’s short for Jack-ass, and that I dropped the “ass” part because I’m not a Democrat. You may call me Jack-elephant if you like.

  4. Well Jack…if you and the majority of Virginians do vote to bring Jim Crow back to life…and worse than that…give Jim Crow standing in the VA constitution…don’t be surprised when high tech firms locate elsewhere….everyone knows that the “greatest cities” all share one fine characteristic…diversity with a large gay/lesbian population.

IF VA wishes to exclude some of the best and the brightest then don’t cry when the best paying firms locate in other states….and don’t cry when lots of folks leave and you are left with only hateful bigots in this state.

I figure if VA decides to be “hateful” and pass the amendment then she’ll end up with what she deserves…I’ve already heard that lots of conventions are going to start declining to meet in anti-gay states…Va. Beach and Williamsburg aren’t going to like the end result of what this is going to reap….

But I’m an optimist…I’m praying Virginians are going to rise to the occassion and vote no….

    Not Moi…

    Buzz…Buzz….

  5. As I mentioned in response to one of Vivian’s reasons to vote no, Virginia topped Forbes list of the best states for business. No other state was even close. I doubt this issue will jeopardize that standing.

Anyway, it might reduce the traffic congestion a bit. 🙂
